The Sun has decided to come out in full force after a very rainy April and May. Whether you're going to watch your little ones play softball outside, out at the speedway watching your favorite racers lap the track in their race cars, or in your garden tending to your plants, it's very important to be prepared and protect yourself against the harmful rays of the Sun!
Here is a quick solution to protecting yourself without guessing what those scientific ingredients on the back of your sunscreen bottle actually are.
Ingredients needed:
- 4 oz. of your favorite moisturizing lotion (if you're feeling motivated, you can also make your own homemade lotion)
- 2 oz. of Sunblocking agent (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
- Prevail sprayer
- 1oz. Of olive oil or grape seed oil
- Hand mixer that you won't use on food afterwards
- Silicone spatula
- 1 plastic storage bag
- Scale for accurate measuring of lotion and sunblocking agent
- Gloves and ventilation mask to protect from agent
What to do:
- Measure 4 oz. of your lotion on the scale in a glass container
- While wearing your gloves measure out .4 oz. of Zinc oxide (or 2 oz Titaniam Dioxide) for a 20+ SPF (See the attached chart for lower protection) in a separate glass container and using the scale
- Add your oil to the powder and blend thoroughly with mixer
- Using silicone spatula scrap the sides of the bowl down into the mixture and continue blending with mixer
- Using silicone spatual, move mixture into the plastic storage bag
- Snip one corner of the bag to transfer your final product into your preval sprayer mess-free (if solution is still a wee bit thick, add a tad more oil to the blend)
Try it out to see how well it works for you! I based this recipe on the highest possible SPF, as I use this mixture on my whole family and we don't want to get any sun burns while outside. Here is a chart to follow if you would like to make a lower SPF.
