Adding interest to the walls in your kitchen is typically accomplished by adding a decorative backsplash.  Because of the high heat and humidity of the kitchen, backsplashes are most often created out of some sort of tile rather than wallpaper.  However, if you’re in the process of remodeling your kitchen or even if you’re just tired of your current backsplash, retiling can get pretty pricey.  Instead, enlist the help of your Preval Sprayer System to add interest through stencils.

Before stenciling your kitchen walls, start by gathering the following materials:

·         Design to copy
·         Artist’s acrylic paint in assorted colors
·         Preval Sprayer
·         Tracing paper
·         Pencil
·         Card stock, acetate, or stencil film
·         Craft knife and cutting mat
·         1 part Elmer’s glue and 4 parts water stir together in the resevoir of the white cap and spray using the Preval (clean Preval using rubbing alcohol and spray through to clean)
·         Bathroom sponge and artist’s paintbrush
·         Heat resistant varnish

Step 1: Start by choosing the design you would like to stencil.  Either print it or photocopy it at the size you would like.  Paint the design in the final colors that you would like it to be so when it comes time to stencil it on the walls you have a guide to follow.

Step 2: Once you’re done, trace the design on acetate, card stock, or stencil film.  Then, use a craft knife and cutting mat to cut the outline of the design.

Step 3: Hold the stencil in position with the Elmer’s glue mixture.   Then, using a slightly damp bathroom sponge, apply a rough-textured coat of pale ocher acrylic paint.

Step 4: Once the basecoat is dry add any detail by freehand using a paint brush.  Next, using your guide, color the different elements of your design using watered down acrylic paint and spraying it on with your Preval Sprayer.

Step 5: Last, you can varnish the stenciled design for durability.  Make sure to use a heat resistant varnish.
